Suggestion for IT Intergation with English

I had a chat with Samatha on integrating English with IT. She was intrested and was willing to try out like what the Chinese Department did for P6.9 pupils. Samantha intends to try it out for P5 pupils as they have another 6 months to record and correct their mistakes. As for the P6, she does not intend to try it out as it is going to be a rush for them and the teachers.

She intends to work it out in Term 3. I will have to discuss with her in regarding this after T2W10, when she is done with the P6 pupils.

Printing

Hmm.. is there a print management software that we could use? We will need to start collecting money for pupils to print so as to cover some of our operation cost. Esle, some people will start printing whatever they want.

They will do that in the library next year. So, might as well start sourcing for some print management software to do the job.

Below is a Memo form that was planned to use it this year but it is not used as the former ICT left.

I suggest that we stick to our current method. This is to prevent students from printing in colour whenever they like.

If we want to track the numbers of pages printed and who printed them then we use back the memo form.

Suggestion for the Elective Module Courses - held during June hols.

As mentioned yesterday, one of the upcoming issues that we have at hand is the Elective Module Course, held during the June Holidays for both the parents and students together.


We are to send out the letters by 21st April. I have few suggestions on working this out. But need your advise in regard to this issue.


Suggestion 1 : Do you think, sending the letter with the option form as an e-mail would be better?


We can ask the boys to drop the completed option form with the cheque in a drop in box at the reception. Since the seats for this workshop, are based on first come first serve it will help us to track as the seats are filled in.


Suggestion 2: The technical team in LEAD are done with creating the Registration Module in d LEAD portal. I have talked with Jasmond and have asked him to release it to our school by tomorrow(18th April). We can use it to regsiter the pupils for the workshop.


The Registration Module, helps to make the registration to the pupils on a first come first serve basis. After the deadline, we can put up the names of the pupils who have enrolled for the workshop in LEAD portal or school website.Alternatively, we can give the form teachers the names of the pupils from their class who have enrolled for the workshop. We can seek their help to collect the cheque or cash.

Meanwhile, we can spend the weekend, trying out to use the Registration Module and playing with. We are the pilot schools to use the Registration Module ;)

Cyberwellness Lessons - Completed : Wk 2 & Wk3. The pupils are trying to follow the skills taught and they are consious to follow it.

P5 Digital Art - Completed for P5.6, P5.7 & P5.9 Classes. P5.8, has one more lesson this Friday, 18/4.

P4 I am the excellent boss - Ongoing : The Class 3 is ongoing. The attendance % is better, after a reminder email sent to the absentees. The Class 4, will be having their Lesson 3 & Leson 4, this saturday (19/4). While Class 3, will be having their Lesson 5 this saturday (19/4)

P1 SpongeBob SquarePants Tying - Ongoing : The pupils of P1.7 - P1.9, have started their EP lesson typing.

P1 - E-mailing Module - Ongoing : Have conducted a training for the P1 teachers, to conduct the lesson on E-mailing with their pupils. The topic on E-mailing is integrated with the English lesson. The lesson Plan and outline were created for the teachers. The teachers have given their schedule. Qizhen and I will be assiting the teachers. The E-mailing module will be starting from Week 5.

DOT COM Club - Podcasting, Ongoing : The pupils vounteered to create the DOT COM Club notice board to display their work. The empty space beside the notice boards has been convereted to a display area to showcase the DOT COM Club pupils work.

Each team of the P5& P6 Dot com Club have created a logo for them and they have given themselves a name. The logos of the team are placed in the display area too.

Admin Task

1. Burnt the P5 pupils Digital Art work into a CD. Have passed a copy of it to Arlette and Jeffery for marking, so that the scores can be added to the pupils SA1 exams for Art.
2. Check & reply the parents E-mail regarding the P4 EP lessons.
3. Do the recording for the Podcasting lesson with the pupils.
4. Download the photos for Sports day
5. Assign the survey for P2 pupils to complete 'Post Course' Survey - P2.7 & P2.8,

Where is everyone?

Hi, seems like it's quite "empty" for the past few weeks. Well, do continue to update your weekly activities here.

To make things easier, all of you don't need to type in paragraphs. All I need is a brief on what was done. You can put in point form.

However, I want to make it mandatory for a suggestion for improvement once a month in the posting. The purpose is for us to continue to improve. Once a person stops thinking of ways to improve, he/she will remain "stagnant" and the department/organisation will suffer.

Very often, people say, "but that's what we have been doing!" Do not get caught in this sentence. In today's world, this is no longer true. If we continue to do things as what we have done, there will be no improvement. As the school motto goes, "The Best is Yet to Be", even if the way we do things is very good, there is another "best" coming.

So, start putting on your thinking cap!

Junior Daily
Term2Week3 is P5.3 IT captain's turn to update the Junior Daily. I gave them another training to refresh their memory. Sometimes the Junior Daily is not updated because the boys forgot or theres a power tripped after they have updated.
I Updated the riddle for term 2.

P1 SpongeBob Typing
Linda and I prepared the SpongeBob files during March holiday. The files are ready for all 3 classes starting in April 10th. We still have to talk to P1.8 form teacher to switch the lessons with us.
P2 Microsoft Words
Term2Week3 is the last lesson for the P2.7, P2.8 and P2.9. Printed the certificates for all 3 classes. They will learn Scanners and Printer for the last lesson.

P3 Cyber Power Adventure (Saturday Class)

I collected the student's work from class1&2 and saved it in my computer। I also picked the top 5 work।The attendances for Class3 & 4 were kind of bad but after we sent out the e-mail to inform the parents, the attendance is much better. Giving them individual project works very well. They manage to follow the lessons without any problem.
Miss Kuan came to sit in the class last week (29/3). She asked the boys to help her with some problems.
Class5 is very full now as there are 43 students. The reason being the boys cant come during saturday cause they have other activities in the school and cant come for class 7 cause they have to go oversea. There are only 40 computers in lab 2. I already told the parents that their son got to share the computers, they are ok with it. Theres one boy who will bring his own laptop cause the form teacher said that he is the "touch me not" kind of student and cannot share things with his friends.

Cyber Wellness
Linda and I prepared the lessons outline/lessons plan and worksheets. To have so many classes in a week is very tiring. Zheng Min said that she will arrange it such that its not so packed next term.
Some feedback from the lessons:
P1
They feel happy when they received an e-mail from their friends. Even the e-mail content is meaningless example blablablablablablabla.
Some thought Internet is free.
P2
The lesson seems effective as many of them send meaningless emails
P3&P4
Some of them admited that they insulted people online and find that it is ok to do it because they can change nick/e-mail anytime.
The better classes find the lesson abit boring as they already know insulting is wrong and they know how to behave.
P5&P6
They find the topic - copyright interesting as they have alot of questions.
Some of them link the subject to computer viruses.

Dotcom Club P3P4
They are currently learning about Online Photo Album. They took pictures using the school's camera last week. They are to upload those photos and some of their favourite pictures online onto the album. They can edit the photos and share it to their friends.

They are not allowed to play games and watching videos. They can still play LEAD games as it is educational. Currently the most popular website they go is iSketch - similar to Pictionary http://www.isketch.net/

Dot Com

Good ideas to have a blog for Dot com club. You should also consider signing google group so that you can save the better podcast and link it to the blog.

It will be good if the pupils continue to make use of what they have learnt. Since they learn about blogging, they should continue to maintain their blog and use it to reflect on things they have learnt as well as to showcase the work they have done during the Dot Com sessions, something like a portfolio for them.

Admin Task

OAS Scanning : The OAS papers were scanned. The OAS papers have been returned to the respective subject head or HOD's. There was not much problems with the OAS scanning except for the class P4.1, where by we have to highlight that they are not supposed to skip the LOA pupils and push the pupils register up.

SpongeBob SquarePants File : Prepared the files for SpongeBob SquarePants. It was a laborious task for slotting the papers in and making sure the CD is intact. We intend to complete the task of preparing the files for classes p1.1 - p1.6 during the June holidays.

ICT Social Studies Project : I have discussed with Mdm Ramiah to know her intrest in doing the Social Studies Project for the P4 pupils. She was keen to do it this year too. She wants to do on the same topic 'Hajjah Fatimah Mosque' but for 2 classes namely, P4.1 & P4.5 Pupils. It will be a done as a discussion in the LEAD portal. The rubrics for marking the discussion has been done already. I have also talked with the ETD officer, Mr Anthony to find out his intrest in the project for the school, as he was involved last year. He is intrested and he wants to have a meeting with the Mdm Ramiah next week. The project will kickstart in Term 3 and end in the week 2 or 3 of Term 4. I will inform Mdm Ramiah on pasting the information in MS Word or MS ppt. so that she can incorporate it in.

Testing using the I sight & Movie Maker : We did the testing on recording the voice and image in I movies & Movie Maker. As mentioned, I movies is earier to work with, rather than with Movie Maker. You have mentioned your intrest in purchasing the Net support Manager for Mac. I have discussed with Topaz soultion in regd to Net Support Manager. Awaiting for their reply.

Enrichment Programme

P1 Emailing Module : Prepared the files with the lesson plan and outline for the teachers. Briefed Qizhen on the Emailing Module, so that she can also assist the teachers when there is a need. Printed the schedule template for Lilian to fill up for the Emailing Module. Need to remind Lilian again to get the slot for training the teachers and starting the Emailing Module on T2W3.

CyberWellness : I have prepared the materials for P3 & P4 Pupils on Netiquettes and for the P5&P6 pupils on Copyrights. The lesson plan and outlines are ready. The worksheets for the pupils are also prepared. Zhang Min is to take a look at them, before it is being sent for printing for the classes. Zhang Min is meeting us on Thursday 20/3 to take a look of the materials prepared.

DOT COM Club: Prepared for the session on Podcasting. The pupils will be using Grage Band to record their podcast. The pupils have been tasked to work on 2 projects. As for the first project, the pupils will learn to record their voice and add in jingles. We want them to be creative as they can be, by using the jingles and creating an imaginary idea. As for the second project, they will record themselves on the topic ' I wished my school to be....' The pupils will be working in groups.

The bunch of boys that I have for the DOT COM Club, are highly energetic and enthusiastic. Wanted to channelize their energy to get something productive. They have the interst to attend the DOT COM Club. I feel that learning just the softwares is not essential. The pupils need to keep up with the trends and technologies.

With all this in consideation, I created a blog for the DOT COM pupils. The purpose of the blog is for interaction and posting in their views and suggestions. This blog is also useful to post in any intresting news they hear or see in regard to intresting things happening around the world. It also serves as a place to upload their best works, for the whole class to see.The pupils of P5, who were in the DOT COM Club, last year have created a blog and they are still using it. On the other hand, with the high amount of energy the pupils are very noisy in the classroom. I have discussed with Hui Hui in regd to this and we have suggested on having groups for the pupils. The pupils are grouped into 7 grps. Marks will be given for good behaviour and marks will be reduced for bad behaviour.

Tasks for T2, W1 -17th Macrh - 22ND March
Make up lesson : I have planned for a make up lesson with the pupils who were absent for the Lesson 5 of Class 1 and Class 2 on 28th March from 10am - 12pm in Computer Lab 1. I have printed the letters and have distributed it to the boys already.

Seems like things are going fine and no major issues.

Junior Daily

Good that pupils are creating new template and use them for Junior Daily. In a way, it gives them some motivation seeing their creation on the screen.

Also, kids these days are very comfortable creating things. If we look at the Internet, many young kids create content and post them on the web. We should start getting our kids to do that as well. (Eg: Blogs, Wikis)

Oral Skills

Do be familiar with the Mac. We should start making use of the tools to enhance pupils' learning. One way is to make use of iSight to record pupils' oral presentation. They can sit in front of the Mac and record their reading.

Pupils can playback the recording and record again if it is not up to their standard. Here are some key considerations:

1) Ease of use - Is it easy to record?
2) Collection of recordings - Can we collect the recordings easily? Emails? Post on the net?

Enrichment Programme

P2 - Cyber Word Attack : This week, most of the pupils have completed the assignment on 'Making the strawberry milkshake". The pupils have started on their second assignment, " The recipe for making Popcorns". The pupils will be continuing the assignment for a week more and then they will learning to print their documents.

P4 - I am the EXCELlent Boss : This week, 3 pupils were absent for each class. Being the first day of the March hols, I believe some of the boys have left for their vaccation. I have a make up lessons to be conducted on 21st March, as one of the boys had informed me earlier that he will not be able to attend the lesson on 8th March, as he going to Australia for Vacation. I will conduct a make up lesson for the 6 pupils (3 pupils from Class 1 & 3 pupils from Class 2) on 21st March. I will be sending out letters to the 6 pupils on 17th March informing them of the make up lesson.

The pupils of class 1 and class 2, did not have time to print their work. I intend to attach their work& mail it to them using the LEAD email account. Some of the pupils, brought their Thumb Drive to take a copy of their work home.

P5 - Digital Art : Except for P5.7, all the other classes are working on the assignment " Class Portrait". The class P5.7, are working on their assignment "Scenery".

I have discussed with Arlette, in regard to printing the pupils work for P5.9 alone. She has agreed to it. I had too have the intention of collecting the pupils work in a folder with their names ad register nos. Had thought of roping the pupils in for the admin work. Shall work on it.

Admin Task

- The letters for the P4 Enrichment Programme,Class 3& Class4 were prepared.

- The certificates for the P4 Enrichment Programme, Class 1 & Class 2 were printed out.

- Created and assigned a hangman game to the P4 Enrichment Progarmme, Class 1 and Class 2 pupils, as a recap lesson on the skills they have learnt from Lesson 1 - Lesson 4.

- The OAS's were scanned for the EL Paper, P3, P4 & P6.

- Informed Lilian in regard to the Emailing Module. Have asked her to get the schedule when the teachers will be using the Lab for their Emailing Module, so that Qizhen or I can go and assist the teachers.

- Called LEAD helpdesk to check on Ms Kuan's LEAD Assignment error

- Conducted a Make up lesson for the P4 Enrichmen Programme pupils - Class 2, as they had to depart on 8th March for their vacation.

- Have extended the deadline for the Survey on PC usage. There are still 200 pupils who have not done the survey yet.

Have uploaded the EL Listening Comprehension files in the LEAD portal and have informed Regina about it. I have also informed her, of where she can find the EL listening Comprehension files. She will inform the P6 teachers.

Task for March holidays - 10th March - 14th March
- Complete Scanning OAS for EL - P5 and Science - P3 - P6 pupils.

Junior Daily

I will change the template to one of the DOTCOM boy's work by this week. I will write the name of the boys on the template example:

In this way, the boys will be pround of their work and the whole school will know who designed / updated the Junior Daily. The students still need reminder to update the Junior Daily.

The attendance is quite bad this week. A number of them have gone on holiday and some are sick. I will give them a make up lesson when they are back to school next week.

Update on LEAD
Jasmond came down and update us on LEAD. Video Bank is a new feature in LEAD. There are also new topics for chinese and higher chinese in "my test bank". I already e-mailed Mdm Lye about it.

Admin SOP & Ideas

Dear all, I am implementing a SOP when supporting staff in ICT department are on MC or go for time off.



Medical Leave


When anyone of you go for medical leave, please update an Excel spreadsheet in the sharing folder.



OT & Time Off

When you are on OT and Time Off, please update the Excel spreadsheet as well.


The rationale for all these is that whenever something crops up, we will need data to back us up. These are only one set of data. We will refer to other data as well (eg: time off form, sign-in book) to verify that the data is accurate.

The learning point is that it is good to have information from a few sources, and with that, the information we have is more accurate.

I will also use the data to do planning and to access how the department is doing.


Ideas

Regarding the collection of money for the printing, you could get one of the pupils to do it during the lesson. He will use a classlist to collect the money. At the same time, create a folder to collect the photos, with the pupils renaming the photos to their register number, followed by their names. The person who collect the money will then check the folder to confirm the photos to be printed.

At the end of the day, it is also a good opportunity for the boy (who collects the money) to learn to be responsible and some organisation skills (how to go about collecting money). If money is missing, we can also pay the balance, as I don't think the amount will be significant.

So, do think about it.

Updates on Term1Week9

Junior Daily
The Junior Daily was not updated for 2-3 days because the P5 went for excursion. The attendance is not perfect but it is definitely better than before.

P3 Cyber Power Adventure (Saturday Class)
The individual project works pretty well. Some of the boys forgot the steps (as expected) but some are good and they help their friends.

This coming saturday(8 March) will be the last lesson for class 1 and class 2. A certificate will be printed for every boy. They will finish up their project and I will do a final recap and a powerpoint presentation on thumb drive + digital camera.
Extra: Parents are still calling to change classes for their sons.

P2 Ms Words
The lesson is going on smoothly and most of them will complete their first project this week.

Cyber Wellness
Zheng Min will plan the schedule for all the classes. Linda and I will plan the lesson outline and lesson plan.

Dot Com Club (p3&p4)
The boys did the template for Junior Daily. I picked a few good ones and will put it up around Term 2. They have completed the powerpoint module and they are now learning how to send e-cards.

Table Keys from p2.2
Today the office called me saying that the teacher of class p2.2 could not unlock the table and need the key from our side. I found out that the lock is changed and our key is not updated. Janet told me the lock is spoiled and they changed it a few days ago. I updated Fithri and he said he will follow up from there.

Chinese Oral
Ms Chia said Mdm Lye requested the picture to be bigger. I will send the edited copy to Ms Chia by this week.

Updates and suggestions

PC Usage by the pupils : I realise only 84.72% of the pupis have completed their Survey on PC Usage. Some of the teachers were asking me, is it possible for them to do the survey after the 29th Feb. I have been explaining to them, that since Mr Goh needs to submit the results to MOE, 28th Feb has been given as the cut off date. I have also told them, I'll get back to them after discussing with Mr Goh.

So how, Mr Goh I believe you have submitted the results to MOE. But I was wondering if it is okay for us to extend the survey for abt 2 more weeks. The results will obviosuly help us for our E-learning day.

P4 Enrichment Programme : Oh gosh! this week had lots of technical probs during the lesson. There was a power trip in Computer Lab 1 and the trip had to be restored from the main. Unfortunaely, Mr Ong or Simon was not around to help us. Had sought the help of Achoo (Grace's mum) but it was futile.

I had swicthed my lesson from Lab 1 to Lab 3. The pupils were disappointed that they were not able to continue in Lab 1, but they were happy they allowed to use the PC's in Mac lab. The pupils were asked to email their work to their own LEAD email acct, so that they can continue next week.

2 pupils informed me that they will not be able to make it for the lesson next week i.e. 8th March, as they are off for their holidays. They agreed for a make up lesson on 5th March (Friday) from 11am - 12pm. There is another pupil who will not be able to make it on the 8th March,as he is flying off to Australia on 5th March. He has been asked to come on 21st March for a make up lesson from 11am - 12pm.
